Minor Floor Hockey "Learn-to-Play" Introduction

 

Winter Season: 10 sessions, every Sunday morning (time TBD)

 

Start date: May - Jul  2025 (Exact date TBD)

 

Location:  Benchmark Sports (284 Orenda Road Brampton, unit 9)

 

Age Group: 3-6 years CO-ED

 

Registration includes: A team jersey, one team photo and end-of-season medals.

 

Mandatory equipment for all players: Certified CSA Hockey helmet with cage/full facial protection, hockey gloves, running shoes, shin guards (soccer style is fine), jock/jill, and a wooden or composite hockey stick

 

Duration: 1 hour (30 minute fundamentals, 30 minute scrimmage)

 

Objective: We Introduce basic floor hockey skills in a fun, engaging environment while fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.

 

Session Breakdown

Warm-Up: Fun, light exercises like jogging in place and stretching with catchy phrases (e.g., "stretch to the sky").

Fundamentals (30 minutes):

 

Stick Handling (10 minutes): Simple drills using cones. Kids weave through cones while controlling the ball with their sticks. We use games like "Red Light, Green Light" to make it playful.

 

Passing (10 minutes): We pair up players to practice short passes. Encourage them to communicate ("pass it to me!"). We introduce a fun passing game like "Monkey in the Middle" to build teamwork.

 

Shooting (10 minutes): Teach proper shooting stance and technique. Use a target practice game with goals or markers.

Scrimmage (30 minutes):

Each team will have a chance to face each other every week. The participants will play a friendly game and allow them to apply the skills they have learned.

 

Our league is set up small, as a 5V5 to ensure everyone gets plenty of touches on the ball. Usually switch shifts every 2-3 minutes.

 

We encourage teamwork and periodically stop for quick reminders on skills.

 

We celebrate all efforts to keep spirits high, whether goals or great passes.

 

 

Cool Down: We gather all players for a fun circle chat, discussing their favourite parts of the session. Emphasize the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. Our structure aims to keep the energy high and ensure every child feels included and excited about learning!
